Representatives from the Valley View Ministerium, a coalition of churches from Farmersville and Germantown, presented a $1,000 donation to the Sonshine in a Bag food program last month.

Sonshine in a Bag

Sonshine in a Bag, a program of Germantown First Church of God, provides bags of food to Valley View students and their families to help supplement school lunch and breakfast programs. The bags are filled with food that students can open, warm and eat by themselves, if necessary.

The program, now in its 12th year, originally sent home food with kids to eat over the weekend. Volunteers now deliver the food to homes in the community every two weeks.

Families who want to participate should contact the school to sign up for the program. Volunteers and donations are welcome. Contact the church for more information.

While the Sonshine program focuses on the school year, other organizations have worked to provide supplemental food during the summer. Farmersville United Methodist Church provides similar bags to Farmersville families in the program from June through the start of school in August.

Valley View Ministerium

Valley View Ministerium has donated more than $3,000 to area programs that help with food insecurity. See Churches Make Donation to Germantown Food Pantry and Ministerium Makes Food Pantry Donation.

The funds come from donations made by the community during the Ministerium’s joint services at Lent, Easter and Thanksgiving, and contributions from member churches.
