The future of the Farmersville school and its land were discussed at the January meetings of the Valley View Board of Education and the Farmersville Village Council.

At the Board of Education meeting, Board member Tyson Dillon said the abatement would start the week of January 12, then air quality samples will be taken. He said the demolition should start in March and there will be “grass on the ground by June.”

Farmersville Mayor Nick Lamb spoke at the Board of Education meeting prior to the Village Council meeting. Noting that the Board of Education has the interests of the whole school district to consider, he presented members with resolutions passed by Jackson Township, German Township and the City of Germantown all supporting the Village of Farmersville’s efforts to acquire the school property in Farmersville.

Farmersville’s Proposal

Lamb noted in his remarks to the School Board that the Village had received appraisals from developers for the land value based on the site’s zoning for low-density residential. This zoning dates back decades, he said.

In the Village of Farmersville Council meeting Lamb shared that the appraisals Farmersville has received are in the range of $100,000-140,000, lower than the estimated $275,000 he said the school may want for the property.

Lamb proposed two courses of action to the Board of Education. First, he said, “Direct sale. We work together on a reasonable price at true market value. We discuss something that would provide immediate revenue to the school district and potentially cover a good portion of the school district’s cost for abatement and demolition of the project.”

Mayor Lamb’s second proposal is a joint development partnership. “The Village of Farmersville would acquire the land and take care of the development phase before public auction,” he told the School Board. “So development includes streets, water, sewer, and then we can sell that to a homebuilder/developer at a much higher price. Proceeds would go to you at a later date.”

“So I guess the real question is if those two options would be considered, is it about a higher total return or is it about receiving money sooner?”

Decisions on the Land are Pending

School Board members did not immediately respond to Mayor Lamb’s comments, which were part of the public participation portion of the meeting. The Board of Education ended its night in executive session “to consider sale of property,” according to its agenda.

The Village of Farmersville also ended its meeting that night with executive session.
