Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith will host a Homestead Exemption outreach event at the Germantown Senior Center on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The open house style event will take place at the Senior Center on Cherry Street, 10 am - noon.

The information session will help eligible homeowners learn more about the Homestead Exemption program and apply ahead of the October 23 deadline to receive the new one-time Homestead Bonus Credit.

The Auditor’s staff will be available to answer questions about the Homestead Exemption, help residents determine whether they may qualify, and assist eligible homeowners with completing an application.

“We want to make sure every eligible homeowner in Montgomery County knows about this opportunity for additional property tax relief,” Keith said. “These events will give residents an opportunity to speak directly with our staff, learn whether they qualify and get help completing their application before the October 23 deadline.”

Under Ohio HB 479, eligible homeowners who apply for the Homestead Exemption by the deadline may receive a one-time additional property tax credit, with many qualifying homeowners expected to receive approximately $450 to $500 in additional savings. The existing Homestead Exemption provides an average annual savings of approximately $550 for Montgomery County participants.

Audior Karl Keith visited the Valley View Board of Education meeting in September to talk about property tax issues and introduce this bonus credit.

The Homestead Exemption reduces the taxable value of a qualifying homeowner’s residence. The program is available to Ohio homeowners age 65 and older, as well as permanently and totally disabled homeowners. Individuals who may be eligible must meet an income requirement and own their home to qualify. Disabled veterans may qualify for additional benefits.

Qualifying homeowners must have a total income that does not exceed the amount set by the law, which is adjusted annually for inflation. For current applications, individual income cannot exceed $41,000. This limit does not include social security income.

Homeowners who already receive the Homestead Exemption do not need to reapply to receive additional credit.

Residents who are unsure whether they qualify are encouraged to attend the sign-up events or contact the Auditor’s Office Homestead Hotline at 937-225-4341.

Homeowners can also apply online at mcauditor.org/homestead or print an application from the website and mail it to the Auditor’s Office.
