Looks like Germantown won’t be partying in 2076. A fund to celebrate the nation’s tricentennial may never have gotten off the ground.
Back in July 1976, when Germantown was still a village, Mayor Marvin Hall asked the council to set aside $700 in a fund that would compound for 100 years and earn approximately $100,000 for use in a tricentennial observance.
According to an online stock calculator, if you invested $700 in the stock market (S&P 500 index) at the beginning of 1976, it would be worth approximately $201,443.59 today—halfway to the tricentennial.
Germantown spokesperson Will Parsons says the fund is not in City records. “I have made inquiries with City leadership, but unfortunately no one here is aware of this fund’s existence; it seems that unfortunately this initiative did not see follow-through.”
According to a story in the Germantown Press, the council voted to establish the fund, but wanted to rely on donations from the community for the $700 investment. It is possible that community donations did not materialize to create the fund.
This was one of the many plans Germantown leaders made to celebrate the nation’s centennial in 1976. (See: Germantown 1976 Celebrations)
