Longtime Spartan football coach Dennis Good has completed a book on the first 57 seasons of Valley View football. “Spartans: 57 Seasons of Valley View Football,” now for sale on Amazon or through Good, features 150 photos and memories from 65 former players.

Good taught English at Valley View High School for 35 years and coached football for 31 years.

He says the 400-page book covers Spartan football history from its first season in 1968, “game by game, season by season.” The book begins with the final season of the Germantown Cardinals.

Good attended the Valley View Hall of Fame event in February to celebrate football players from the class of 1998.

Player Memories and Stories

“I'll tell you a couple of the stories that kids sent me; I was in tears reading them,” Good said. “Because they were so serious about what football meant to them and how important it was at that time and how they were going through things in their personal life. If it wasn't for football, who knows what would have happened to me, and that kind of thing. Oh my goodness, you don't realize that when you're in the middle of it.”

“Some of the guys gave me 4, 5, 6 different stories,” he said. “Some just gave me one story. Some of the stories are hilarious. I mean, funny as can be.”

Good contacted more than 125 players to seek out memories for the book. Early Spartan Steve Moyer provided memories from the 1970s. Well-known alumnus and former Major League Baseball player Thomas Howard shared stories of his time as Spartan quarterback in 1982, the District’s first SWBL champion team.

The book also includes stories from Shane Hannah, who played for Michigan State and the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. Aaron Focht, who played for Stanford, is also in the book.

After two years of work, Good is launching the book as the 2026 football season kicks off. Valley View teacher William Longman and John Keller, who works with the current football program, provided assistance in getting the book published.

Sequel in the Works

Good shared that multiple players have asked if certain stories are in the book. “They'll tell me a story I never even heard,” he said. “I didn't even know that story happened. And they said, well, oh, you should have put it in. It was the best story. And I said, listen, I've got about four or five memories that didn't get in a book already given to me, so I really, I really believe there's going to be a sequel.”

“I know there are more stories,” he said, “and I'm just happy to preserve these memories because if it's not recorded now, it's going to disappear.”
