Stebbins Plumbing & Heating in West Carrollton celebrated its 100th birthday on July 26, the date of founder Cecil Stebbins’ 126th birthday.

Former workers, business partners and three generations of his family celebrated the milestone with food and live music at the business on East Dixie Drive.

The business is currently owned by Cecil’s grandson Bruce Stebbins, who has been working at Stebbins Plumbing since he was in high school.

Previous owners include grandson Gene Stebbins of Jackson Township, who managed the business until his death in 2002, and Cecil’s sons Don, Bob and Joe Stebbins, who took over the business in 1964 and ran it for more than 30 years.

Cecil’s son Joe said his father originally wanted to be a milk inspector and had taken a course at Ohio State University. His Uncle Eddie asked for his assistance with his own plumbing business and he never went back.

Cecil Stebbins was part of an innovative family. His brother Walter, a Mad River principal and superintendent, is the namesake of Stebbins High School. His brother-in-law Lester Schenck founded Schenck Furniture in Germantown, which just celebrated its 90th anniversary, but is no longer owned by the family.

The business, which focuses on commercial plumbing, has benefited from the boom of new gas stations in the region. Stebbins Plumbing did face hard times in its 100-year history, surviving the Great Depression when businesses and families didn’t have money for plumbing repairs and World War II when equipment and piping was in short supply.

Many members of the Stebbins family worked at the business over the years and current owner Bruce Stebbins’ son and granddaughter are planning to continue the family tradition.
